Purpose: Patients (and family members) who have mental illness often must deal with the social stigma or misunderstanding regarding their illness. Increasing awareness and public health education about mental illness is necessary to dispel myths and misinformation that related to mental health and mental illness. Understanding these influences and perceptions is crucial in addressing the psychosocial impact upon the mental health patient. Student Outcome(s): The student will analyze the media entertainment industryâ s portrayal of mental illness and evaluate the accuracy of the depiction of the mental illness, the associated psychosocial impact, and the methods of recovery. The student will determine the highest priority diagnoses for the mental disorder portrayed as well as appropriate patient goals and nursing interventions. The student will utilize their assessment and critical thinking skills to complete the assignment. Directions: Students will select a topic related to the material that will be discussed in the NURS Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing course (review the course for topics). Once a topic is determined, the student will choose a film (The film chosen is REQUIEM FOR A DREAM 2000), that directly relates to that mental health topic. Students will write a brief 6 page APA formatted paper that includes the title of the film, the identified mental disorder or disruption in health to which the movie relates, and a brief summary of the movie plot. Then students will analyze the portrayal of the mental illness within the film and comment upon the influence this might have on the patient or upon societal views of the mental disorder. Clinical learning outcomes: ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF THE MEDIA PORTRAYAL PAPER Based upon your knowledge of the mental health topic, please reflect upon the following questions: 1. Is the mental disorder appropriately portrayed in this film? Why or why not? Utilize your textbook and the DSM V to support your discussion. 2. How does the movie or the portrayal of the character depict mental illness or potentially influence the viewersâ (societal) perceptions of this mental illness? 3. What would be high priority nursing diagnoses for a patient with these mental health issues or this mental illness? Please include two or three nursing diagnoses with potential patient goals. 4. What are some of potential nursing interventions that would be appropriate for a patient with these mental health issues or this mental illness?
